Exchange Server
Most small business start out using an internet provider for their email. This is sufficient for very small businesses but at some point it becomes unmanageable and the benefits of having your own email system become important. Using internet POP3 mail the mail is on the local PC and vulnerable to loss if not regularly backed up, is dependant on the provider to be up and fast, may limit the size of files that can be sent or received and makes the use of global lists, storage of shared attachments, archiving, SPAM filtering, and synched devices like PDA calendars and mail difficult or impossible. Increasingly Regulatory agencies or requiring email management and archiving procedures that are only possible with an Exchange Server.
